What is the problem?
VUB should practice what they preach!
The VUB wants to be the most sustainable university in Belgium. And while our food systems are responsible for around a third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, the VUB still serves meat and dairy in their canteens. As an university with the ambition to be the most sustainable, our food offers currently lag far behind the science we study every single day.
What can we do?
VUB serves 140,000 meals every year!
Every plate served in the cafeteria, every catering ordered and snack bought is a decision that VUB makes - and can change.
Universities, as institutions that shape knowledge, culture, and future decision-makers, have both the responsibility and the leverage to lead society-wide transformation in line with their own research and values.
By going 100% plant-based, the VUB would take a massive step towards a more sustainable university!
Is that even possible?
Yes, absolutely. Not only have universities like Graz shown us what's possible, but also we achieved a student council vote for 80% plant-based catering last year. Together with your help we're making the next step and become a 100% plant-based university 💚!

What a day! After a long discussion in the student council, a large majority voted for an 80% plant-based university until 2032.
After not even two months of campaigning we gathered over 1,000 signatures of students who want to turn the VUB plant-based!

Ongoing discussions with the head of campus facilities and the cafeteria team have already led to first successes:
- From now on, the student deal will be 100% vegetarian every single day, and 50% of the time it will be fully vegan.
- Throughout March, all vegetarian and vegan options will be €1 cheaper than the meat option - making the most sustainable choice the most affordable one.
- On March 3rd, every sandwich sold (almost 900 in one day!) will be completely vegetarian.
