Food systems are responsible for around a third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, and animal products are the dominant driver. Meat and dairy alone generate more emissions than all the world's planes, ships, and cars combined. Every meal the Uni Salzburg serves is a choice between perpetuating this crisis or being part of the solution.
Every plate is a decision the University makes and can change. The University of Salzburg has already committed to being climate neutral by the year 2040. Going 100% plant-based is one of the most effective and controllable ways to actually deliver on that promise.
University of Graz went fully plant-based. University of Vienna transitioned two cafeterias to 70% plant-based — and the University of Salzburg can be next!

Since March 2026 we are officially a ÖH Club at the University of Salzburg.

We had a lecture shoutout at Pr. Blechart lession.
Thank you so much for the possibility to speak about our student movement.

We are of course an important part of the climate movement. What we consume has a major impact on climate and the greenhouse emissions. Therefore we are happy that we were able to hold a speech at the climate strike organised by Fridays for future.
We support each other in this fight for liveable future.

We are happy to announce that the ÖH gave us their full support for our demand for a 100% plantbased canteen. It is really important to have the student union on our side.

In January 2026, our Plant-Based Universities member Johanna Köll joined forces with the “VeränderungsMacher:innen” project team to conduct a large-scale survey at the University of Salzburg canteen. Over four days, 425 responses were collected to find out what students really want from their university food.
The results sent a clear message: students want more affordable, filling and nutritious meals and a broader, higher-quality plant-based selection. In fact, expanding and improving vegetarian and vegan options emerged as one of the three main areas for action.
But we didn’t stop at collecting data. Together with the project team, university representatives, the Students’ Union and Plant-Based Universities, we brought the results directly to the canteen management and discussed concrete improvements.
One concrete outcome: the canteen management agreed to make the Study Teller fully vegan, including all its components, and to explore additional filling sides and protein-rich foods.
For us, this is what change looks like. Our future is important and change is really necessary to have a future and a planet to live on.
We continue our work together with your support.
