Food systems are responsible for around a third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, and animal products are the dominant driver. Meat and dairy alone generate more emissions than all the world's planes, ships, and cars combined. Every meal University of Manchester serves is a choice between perpetuating this crisis or being part of the solution.
University of Manchester topped the 2026 Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Rating, and has committed to zero direct emissions by 2038 and net zero by 2050. Moving to 100% plant-based catering is one of the most visible, controllable and practical ways to actually deliver on those promises and show that a top-ranked university acts on its own commitments.
Since 2024, the University of Graz’s canteen has been 100% plant-based, the first of its kind in Austria, after students campaigned for plant-based menus. Students across England are already making it happen: students’ unions at Birmingham, Kent, Cambridge, Queen Mary and more have voted to move towards 100% plant-based catering. Manchester can be next!
