Strathclyde Students Drop Banner Calling For 100% Just and Sustainable Plant-Based Menus

In a call for Scotland’s universities to lead the way on climate solutions, students are calling for the “no-nonsense” move towards plant-based menus. A large banner, displayed on Strathclyde’s campus, alongside individuals outreaching to fellow students at the university, is intended to send a clear message to management.


Dev Kornish, Plant-Based Universities Strathclyde campaigner said
“Strathclyde has an opportunity to join Stirling in leading the way for Scotland, and the world. Across the UK we’ve seen huge support for Plant-Based Universities from students and academics alike. The need to transition to sustainable catering is urgent and we call on Strathclyde to act now.”

The campaigners cited research from the University of Oxford showing that animal farming and fishing are leading causes of the climate and ecological crises - contributing to issues such as land use, acidification, and water pollution [2]. Some estimates suggest that food system emissions could be reduced by 75% by the transition to a plant-based one [3].


Plant-Based Universities is working to support Scottish farmers in this transition, acknowledging the need to uphold the value of rural communities as food producers and cornerstones of society.


Dr Carol Jasper, Lecturer in Social Psychology and Qualitative Research Methods at the University of Stirling said
“It’s really inspiring that our students, here at Stirling University, have already voted for the catering of their union to be fully plant-based, taking decisive steps on climate. I hope to see Strathclyde and other universities follow soon.”

The Plant-Based Universities campaign, an Animal Rising campaign, is a nationwide initiative of students who are pushing for their universities and student unions to adopt 100% plant-based catering [4]. The group claims that universities have an obligation to follow the scientific research that they produce, detailing the environmental impacts of animal farming and fishing. The campaign is active in over 50 institutions, with the group encouraging interested students to sign up to run local campaigns.
